In modern society, we view religion and spirituality far different than our ancestors, particularly within the realm of  Christianity. This shift has seen an intellectualization and scientification of spiritual concepts, which has effectively distorted ancient truths and connections to the divine. This shift has complicated the once simple and inherent right of humans to connect directly with the Creator, introducing unnecessary middle-men that disrupt this natural bond.

Historically, across many civilizations, it can be observed that power structures have manipulated spiritual truths for the sake of control. Recognizing these patterns is pivotal to unraveling the broader implications these distortions have on both personal spirituality and societal structures.

Consider the concept of Jesus in Gnostic texts, not as a distant and separate deity, but as a figure who values self-knowledge as equivalent to knowledge of God. In the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas, Jesus conveys to Thomas that they are equals, both having their essence from the same divine source. This message is radically different from orthodox Christianity’s teachings, which portray God as wholly other and distinct from humanity. Modern churches are known to place themselves between God and humanity – manipulating patrons for personal gain. 

In these Gnostic narratives, Jesus emerges not merely as a savior from sin but as a guide toward enlightenment and spiritual understanding. This portrayal shifts his role from a divine lord to be worshiped to that of a teacher or guide, whose primary role is to facilitate an individual’s direct, personal connection with the divine. Once a disciple attains enlightenment, the boundaries between the teacher (Jesus) and the student dissolve. This dissolution is a reflection of a fundamental Gnostic belief in the potential for each individual to realize their inherent divinity.

This stands in sharp contrast to the doctrines of modern mainstream Christianity, which often emphasize the unique divinity of Jesus as the Son of God, a figure distinct and set apart from the rest of humanity. The Gnostic viewpoint challenges this notion of separation and argues that all individuals share a divine nature and origin with Jesus. This perspective negates the necessity for an intercessory figure or institution to mediate this sacred relationship. In other words, Jesus taught the we all have a God-given connection to the Creator – as we all come from the same source of life. Jesus never taught us to go to church every Sunday, nor did he do so himself. 

This viewpoint represents a direct, personal approach to the divine, one that aligns with the obscured truths about our direct connection to the Creator, truths often veiled under layers of institutional doctrine by modern Christianity.

The re-examination of these Gnostic texts invites us to contemplate a more intimate and immediate relationship with the divine, encouraging a spiritual independence that has been long overshadowed by institutionalized religious doctrines. It is through understanding and embracing these ancient insights that we might reclaim the profound connection to the Creator that is every individual’s birthright.
